Having a fire hydrant nearby does not automatically mean it can provide enough water when it is needed most.
This is where a hydrant flow test becomes critical.

Why Fire Hydrant Capacity Matters
Under Singapore's Fire Code, fire hydrant requirements are determined based on factors such as:
Building type
Occupancy usage
Fire compartment size
Required firefighting water demand
Depending on the size of the largest fire compartment, a development may require hydrant flow rates such as:
38 L/s
57 L/s
76 L/s
The larger the compartment, the greater the firefighting water demand.
Many owners are surprised to learn that the key question is not whether a hydrant exists, but whether it can deliver sufficient flow rate and pressure during an emergency.
What Is a Hydrant Flow Test?
A hydrant flow test is conducted to determine the actual performance of the existing public hydrant network.
The test typically measures:

Available firefighting water supply
This allows engineers and authorities to verify whether the existing public infrastructure can support the fire protection requirements of the development.

Real Project Example
In one of our recent projects, we were engaged to assess whether the existing public hydrant infrastructure could support the proposed fire safety requirements.
A hydrant flow test was carried out.
The results showed:
Flow Rate: 60 L/s
Running Pressure: 4.0 bar
The required hydrant demand for the project was satisfied by the existing public water supply.
As a result, the development did not require an additional hydrant tank or fire pump system.
This helped avoid unnecessary construction costs, equipment installation, and long-term maintenance obligations.

Why This Matters During A&A Projects
For Alteration & Addition (A&A) projects, change-of-use applications, and factory-to-dormitory conversions, fire safety requirements often change.
